Hi,I am Dr. Andrew Rynne (Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
My dad is 90 and lives in Phoenix, AZ. He has lost some weight and has coughing spells when he talks which makes it hard for him to talk. His voice starts out okay but it ends in a strained whisper with coughing. His recent chest x-ray showed some scaring in the lungs. He got a chest ct scan but don t know results yet. Could this be chronic valley fever or is it more likely to be lung cancer. He does not smoke but he gets out and prune trees. He also had triple bypass when he was 88 and doing good with that.
I have gone through the medical history of your father and understood your concerns.
Coughing spells when he talks could be due to dried laryngs (perhaps too much talking) or stomach hyperacidity issues due to the meds he is currently taking after triple bypass.
However, if I was his caring doctor would run a complete cardiac check up to rule out cardiac issues. The scaring in the lungs could be due to old infections he might have gone through. TB should be ruled out.
We cannot rush and say it is from lung cancer before ruling out other problems as mentioned above.
Please talk with his doctor and let me know. All the best.
