Hi,I am Dr. Andrew Rynne (Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
I recently had an echocardiogram because of dyspnea. My family doctor said it showed diastolic dysfunction but did not give me medicine or suggestions for treatment. Should I consult a cardiologist on my own? I had a thallium stress test a little over a year OK and was told it was all right. I am 71 years old and female with a strong history of heart disease in my family resulting in 3 members (father and siblings) having bypass surgery.
Hello, Thanks for choosing Health Care Magic. I can understand your concern. Diastolic dysfunction is commonly seen in people older than 65.It refers to dysfunction of the heart during its resting stage. The prognosis depends on the grade of diastolic dysfunction. This would be present in the echo report. kindly let us know. If you have high blood pressure, we will have to control it. Drugs like beta blockers( they reduce bp and heart rate) are advised which will lower the heart rate and allow time for heart to relax. If dyspnea is severe or fluid build up is noted certain drugs diuretics would be advised. It would be advisable to consult a cardiologist for a thorough elvaluation.
Hope this helps.
