What Does Foul Smelling Stools With Mucus In A Child Indicate?

My daughter will be 2 next month, however she is still not potty trained, so she still wears diapers. For the past 2 days, she has had some real bad smelling poop. I know it doesn t normally smell good, but its been abnormally foul. And I also noticed she had what looked like goo or mucus in it as well. Any suggestions?

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service.

I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

Is your toddler otherwise healthy? Does she have diarrhea? Have there been an increased number of soiled diapers? Is she taking any medicines?

The odor of stool (poop) is due to the bacteria that are normally in everyone's intestines. Occasionally the types of these bacteria change which causes a different or stronger odor. The inside lining of the intestines normally produce mucus which keeps the lining from drying out. The usual color of intestinal mucus is clear or white. It becomes significant when it is red.

I hope this is of help to you. Please return if we can assist you again.
