What Does It Mean To Strain During A Bowel Movement?

I have been straining to have bowel movements for quite some time. Not always, but frequently. I have a bowel movement everyday. No other symptoms. I am on a medication called Remeron and have been for a couple of months. Can you shed some light on this. Also I have been stressed off and on for quite a while.

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

You are probably having constipation predominantly irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). You can take laxatives, like Lactulose for symptomatic relief. Avoid spicy food and include more fiber rich foods in your diet. If symptoms persist, better to consult a gastroenterologist and get a colonoscopy done.

Wishing you good health.

Thanks.
