What Does Orange Discharge From The Nose Indicate?

My husband had a really bad head cold and has had it for a few days now. Just recently he started pouring out orange liquid from his nose. I read it may be spinal fluid. Is this a major problem we should worry about? He has never had this problem before, just in the last two days.

Neurologist 's  Response
Hello,

Typically cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) is known for its clarity. Therefore, orange would be an unusual color to be sure. Also, there is a slightly sweet taste if he has swallowed any of it. It is easy to test for by taking a sample to a lab with a doctor's order. If it is CSF then, I agree that it should be investigated as to cause for the spontaneous leak and I would see a neurologist for further work-up on that issue.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Dariush Saghafi
