What Does Recurring Pain In Ankle While Walking Suggest?

About 3 years ago I started having severe ankle pain when walking. Xrays were negative. At that time, it was sometimes possible to relieve the pain by turning my foot inward while walking. (The pain is on the medial side just behind the ankle bone.) It will not occur for weeks or months but, then, it will happen again suddenly. Sometimes it is brief, other times it continues for a couple of days but not every time I get up to walk. Baffled!
