General & Family Physician, Dr. Vasudha's Response
Hi, I understand your concern. Single loop of umbilical cord at 28 weeks of pregnancy is seen due to fetus passing through loop of umbilical cord-while it moves in womb( which is free at 28 weeks).Umblical cord provides nutrition to fetus & not oxygen-so there is no risk of strangulation of baby immediately. Loose loops are surrounded by a lubricant mucus substance- so many a times corrected while fetus rewinds itself in opposite direction. Cord around neck is not an indication for LSCS/ early intervention of pregnancy. Only fetal distress needs to be detected earliest so- At the most it is adviced to keep a close watch on fetal movements / get a follow up scan if the movements are lesser/after 1 month. Have more frequent pregnancy check ups. Thanks.
