Hi,I am Dr. Andrew Rynne (Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
HI to you. My 92 year old mother is in a assisted living group home and has had a swollen right leg for at least 2 weeks. The P.A. at the home keeps telling her to keep her leg up whenever possible. She has a history of congestive heart failure. Has a pacemaker. Would you consider this condition urgent?
Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.
Suggestive of deep vein thrombosis. Based on the history, your mother seems to be suffering from deep vein thrombosis.
Deep vein thrombosis occurs when a blood clot forms in one or more of the deep veins in the legs to cause leg pain or swelling, but also can occur with no symptoms. It can develop if you don't move for a long time, such as after surgery or an accident, or when you're confined to bed.
It can result in a serious condition because blood clots in the veins can break and travel through your bloodstream and lodge in the lungs resulting in blocking blood flow (pulmonary embolism).
So, she needs to be examined by a doctor immediately for proper evaluation and treatment.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards, Dr. Mohammed Taher Ali
