Hi,I am Dr. Prabhakar Koregol (Cardiologist). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
This morning, after working 3rd shift, I had my blood pressure taken. It was 142 over 89, I think. Either way the nurse was concerned. I just tested my blood pressure at home with a Reli On automatic blood pressure tester and it said my blood pressure was 123/74. That is normal correct? What would cause the major swing. Machine vs Human? I am 40 years old and have never been told I have high blood pressure. It doesn t run in my family either. I am in good shape and eat fairly well. Sleeping is an issue being a third shifter and having 4 kids and a wife:)
Hello, blood pressure fluctuates normally, depending on physical activity, psychological stress etc. This is nothing to worry about! You should be concerned if you've consistently measured blood pressures near or above the high normal limit of 140/90mmHg. If most of your measurements are lower than that then you're absolutely normal. If you've found many bordeline readings then perhaps a 24 hour measurement (Holter) will clarify your situation. In any case, avoiding salt, eating healthy and keeping your body weight within normal limits will help a lot with blood pressure. Physical activity helps as well. Abnormal sleep patterns may make things worse but this is something you can't probably avoid. Just try to rest enough when you can.
I hope I've helped! If you'd like more information you can contact me again.
Kind Regards!
