I had a cold about three months ago and right after I noticed my sense of smell diminished. I did a CT scan of the sinusus and here s my result: several subcentimeter mucus retention cysts are present within the maxillary sinuses. I m african american, 44 years old and have often have minor seasonal sinus issue but not several. My doctor put me on levofloxcin and prednisone for a week. I m just wondering if this is what is alterning with my sense of smell.
It is unlikely that several subcentimeter mucous retention cysts in your maxillary sinus have anything to do with your loss of smell as this area of the nose does not have smell fibres. Your smell centres are located at the roof of the nose between your eyes and many times the smell fibres can be affected by minor injuries such as violent sneezing, stumble while walking or sudden hit on the face. They may also be affected if there is sinus disease in the ethmoidal region of the nose.
The medications prescribed are correct and your smell should recover in a week or two with the medications. You may need a neurologist to evaluate you if the loss of smell persists.
Hope this information helps. Do let me know if you have any other questions.
