I recently had my fasting blood sugar tested as a part of other lab work. It came back at 191. the doctor told me to have it checked again in 3 months. Should I be concerned and make another appointment for further evaluation before then? I do have family history of diabetes ( both my paternal grandfather and my father).
Hello there, Your fasting sugar of 191 mg is concerning and definitely needs attention, considering the strong family history. You seem to have diabetes already with this fasting reading Although it would have helped me to know your gender and age, but fasting sugars for all non pregnant adults has to be less than 100 to be considered normal. Do not wait for 3 months and better get an appointment with a diabetologist who can suggest few more blood tests like Oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT) if doubtful diabetic status, Hba1c, Kidney functions and Lipid profile for complete evaluation and also to start therapy as it looks like you need to be on therapy. Till then start to cut all sweets and sugars from diet. Try to include some form of exercise in your daily routine. These changes will also help you to bring down sugars.Uncontrolled sugars can cause complications of diabetes. Hope this helps. Take care.
