What Does This GGT Reading Of 66 Indicate?

Hi, I have just been given Gamma GT reading of 66 U/L. Where as my other readings ALP, ALT and AST are within the range. I am 36 years old and weight 124 kg, height 6 feet(182 cm). I don t smoke and don t drink alcohol. I am taking tegretol cr 1200mg/day due to scar epilepsy, thyronorm 125 mcg/day for thyroid and storvas 10 mg/day for Cholesterol. ALP - 86 U/L ALT - 9 U/L AST - 21 U/L What could be the cause ? and what can I do to lower my GGT ?

Hi,

The reference range for gamma-glutamyl transferase (GGT) is 0-30 IU/L.

GGT levels may be increased due to medications, such as Carbamazepine, Cimetidine, Furosemide, Heparin, Isotretinoin, Methotrexate, oral contraceptives, Phenobarbital, Phenytoin, and Valproic Acid.

Probably your taking Carbamazepine which may elevate the GGT.

Still many causes for an elevation of GGT, you may consult your treating doctor he may advice alternate medication for seizure disorder in place of Carbamazepine.
