What Does This MRI Report Indicate?

My mother-in-law has been suffering from Parkinson s disease for 15 years, although it is not the kind that gives her much tremor. However, she is now declining mentally and has brain atrophy and her recent mri showed small white spots on the pons. What could that signify?

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

Dementia is a common phenomena in someone suffering for a long time with Parkinson's disease, so some degree of brain atrophy is expected after 15 years. You do not state her age, but some atrophy is expected in all of us as we age as well. So the atrophy in itself doesn't signify much. As for the white spots in the pons it is hard to say, it would be useful to have the full report in order to know how those spots look in different sequences. The most likely guess would be age related changes in the small blood vessels but the complete report is needed.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
