Hello,
A follow up of an
abnormal Pap smear result depends on the report - whether it is mild or moderate or
severe dyskaryosis. With mild abnormality - a repetition of test after six months may show that lesion has resolved by itself because the cells in this area are actively multiplying and changing and being replaced. The body has a natural ability to resolve and often the repeat smear may show a normal result when repeated.
If the lesion persists or shows a greater level of abnormality, then it has to be investigated with
colposcopy and a guided
biopsy. It involves placing in a position suitable to examine the cervix and adjoining areas under magnification with colposcopy and using special dyes (iodine) to identify the cells or areas that are abnormal and take a guided biopsy from the areas identified as abnormal in this way.
The procedure can be uncomfortable because of the position one has to be in for the examination to be possible, for a prolonged length of time. Local blocks and analgesia can be given to reduce pain and discomfort. The cost of the procedure would increase due to the addition of the
anesthetic cost.
Some gynecologists can incorporate it into their overall fee structure. Your
pain tolerance is something that you would need to discuss with your consultant. General
anesthesia has its own risks and may not really be necessary unless you have medical conditions that make it a worthwhile consideration.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards,
Dr. Sabina Hussain
