Hi,I am Dr. Prabhakar Koregol (Cardiologist). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
I received a letter from my doctor with my blood test results. It was marked "room for improvement" but nothing else. I'm a 53 yrs old female with the following results. Total Cholesterol 254, Triglycerides 249, LDL 158 and HDL 47. My blood pressure at the office visit 136/98. All of the above numbers appear to be high. Should I be concerned? Thank You
I read your query and I understand your concern. It is true the lipids in your blood are augmented. While this doesn't pose immediate life-threatening risk, over a long time they constitute a risk factor for atherosclerotic damage, hence the risk of vascular disease (heart attack, stroke etc). Lipid profile is not the only risk factor, there are other ones like high blood pressure, diabetes, smoking, so all those should be considered when evaluating the risk. Even if no other risk factors measures should be taken, starting with regular exercise and a healthy diet. After that lipid profile should be checked again (say in 3 months) and if still the same high values, treatment should be considered. If you already have suffered vascular problems, meaning you are at high risk, treatment should be considered right away. Hope to have been of help.
