Hi,I am Dr. Amitkumar Sharma (Internal Medicine Specialist). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
What Is An Alternative Of Metformin That Can Be Taken To Keep Diabetes Under Control?
I am currentIy taking 1000mg of Metformin twice daily for my Type II diabetes. I have heard bad things about Metformin in terms of it being linked to dementia/alzheimers. It s also gravely thinning out my hair. I am looking for an alternative medication.
Actually, I have prescribed Metformin to hundreds of patients, and have never heard of any problems with hair thinning, and I haven't been able to find anywhere that that is a side effect. I also cannot find link to dementia/Alzheimer's. Maybe if you knew where you heard that from, I could comment on that, but from what I know Metformin does not cause those problems.
However, if you really wanted to stop Metformin, there are other medications you can use, though Metformin is one of the best ones. Oral medications like Actos and Glipizide can also be used, as well as many other oral and injectable medications. Your doctor should be able to discuss these with you.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
