Hi.I am a
pediatrician. Welcome to health care magic. Let me solve your query.
BRIEF ANSWER:
Watery loose stools are nothing to worry. Continue breast feeds and give
ORS.
DETAILED ANSWER:
First of all, please know that young children, less than 2 year old, frequently tend to pass stools within 30 minutes after feeds, which is called as gastrocolic reflex which is a normal phenomenon and that stops as the child grows older and as the gut matures. If that is the case with your child, please do not worry about any further.
An otherwise uncomplicated loose stools (i.e., child is not passing blood mixed stools, has normal urine output and he is otherwise alert) doesn't require anything except for ORS, continuing breastfeeds and zinc.
I would especially recommend zinc for your child (10 mg/day for 14 days) as this would not only decrease the duration of present episode of loose stools but also will decrease the chances of future occurrence of loose stools.
Make sure that you child takes atleast 1/2 glass of ORS after passing each loose stool. Hope i have addressed your query. Please get back to me if you have any further questions. I would be happy to help. Thank you.
