What Is The Cause And Treatment For Chronic Headaches?

My 17 year old daughter has been diagnosed with chronic daily headache. I think that she may have hemicrania continua. She has had a constant (it never goes away, 24/7), sometimes severe, headache for 3 years. It is usually always on the left side. If she tries to exercise at all, even a slow bike ride, she feels like her head is going to blow up. Also, twice in the last three years she had episodes where it got so bad her left eyelid was twitching and she could not really open it at all. Her eye itself was bloodshot and it was was watering. No medication the doctors have given her have helped, including verapamil, amitriptyline, neurontin, narcotics on occasion when it has gotten really bad (ended up with rebound headaches), and many others meant to be taken at the onset of a "migraine". She has not been able to go to school for the past 3 years because it hurts so bad. She also has light and sound sensitivity, and is extremely sensitive to smells. All of this happened following a sinus infection, not sure if this is important.

Hi, welcome to our site. I am Dr Saumya Mittal.

Read your query. That is a very significant question and i appreciate your problem. I will try my best to answer your query

to a large extent, thisd sounds like a migraine problem, almost status migranous. she has unilateral pain, with photophobia, phonophobia. all symptoms fit into migraine

howeverm i would like to know if a mri brain has been done, and if done, what was the report?

second, a persistent sinusitis itself may cause headaches mimicing a migraine. so i would suggest you evaluate that via x ray pns water view

also have her eye sight tested, especially if the headache is less in morning and more in evening

I hope this helps you. Inform the reports mentioned above so i can be of help further. Best of luck.

I have given you the answer to the maximum considering the information provided. The results of the tests could further enhance my answer to you.
