What Is The Cause And Treatment For Spasms In The Neck And Back?
Hi, I am a 21 year old women. I fell on the back of my neck/top of part of my back just over a week ago. The pain initially was terrible and I stayed still for an hour until the pain subsided enough for me to get up and move. A few days later, I went to check my back out with the doctor and they said I just had some muscular and potential bone bruising. Since then, I have had sudden spasms in my neck and upper back - some expected e.g. from being frightened and some random, unexpected. The pain is getting worse and it is particularly uncomfortable to sleep and breathe deeply now unlike before. Did the doctor miss something and is the situation more serious than first thought or is this normal?

Orthopaedic Surgeon, Joint Replacement, Dr. Saurabh Gupta's Response
Hello, Thanks for your query. It's not uncommon in young people like yourself to have these neck pains. These might be posture related causing muscle spasm. Though self limiting, it need not be underestimated.
All you need to do is correct your posture habits, like appropriate neck position while working on computer, avoiding pillow while sleeping, or while making sudden movements. I assure you this discomfort will go away unless you do something to aggravate it in your routine. You can gradually resume them and even do neck isometric exercises, which you can learn from a physiotherapist near you.
I do hope that you have found something helpful and I will be glad to answer any further query. Take care
