Hi,I am Dr. Subhankar Chakraborty (Gastroenterologist). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
I recently went tot the bathroom and my stool was red and spongy. I left the hospital a month ago with a bleeding ulcer in my small intestine, but my stool was dark blackish red. my stool samples went back to normal and they released me to my primary care doctor. Now I'm confused about the bright red I'm seeing as I haven't eaten or drank anything with red pigmentation. What do you think?
Hi Fresh blood in the stool usually indicates bleeding from the lower gastrointestinal tract, including the colon, rectum and anus. As in your blood is fresh and bright two likely possiblities are -hemorrhoids may cause bright red blood on coating the stool after a bowel movement. - Anal Fissures –It a small tear in the lining of the anus, which can cause bleeding. Initially i would suggest you to go for digital examination along with proctoscopic examination of your rectal and anal canal by your gastro to look for hemorrhoid or anal fissures. Take 10 ml of lactulose once daily at bed time to make stool softas some time over straining while passing hard stool can also rip mucosa causing bleed.
