What Is The Cause Of Brown Discharge?

Day 38 of cycle.. 8 days late and I'm having very small amount of brown discharge only when I wipe. My husband and I have been trying to conceive. I took a pregnancy test 4 days ago and it was negative. Should I bother with getting another test? Or is this most likely just a late starting period?
