Hi,I am Dr. Prabhakar Koregol (Cardiologist). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
My heart skips beats all day long.I have counted up to 50 a day before. There is never any pain and I do not become dizzy but they do take my breath away and I have to cough to get my heart back to normal.I do not drink caffine or alcohol and I do not smoke.I am 250lbs.Could this be why i am having the skipped beats?
Dear Sir/ Madam Thanks for your query. Skipped beats are manifestation of alteration in heart rhythm. This alteration may be transient or prolonged. The difference can be made after an ECG only. The transient disturbance is mostly due to premature contractions. If they occur daily, they can be picked up on 24 hours holter monitoring. They are considered benign and do not warrant therapy if heart turns out to be normal on cardiac ultrasound. treatment is only directed towards any precipitating cause or symptoms. Prolonged rhythm disturbances need detailed work-up. Stress/ anti-asthma drugs/ anti-cold drugs/ thyroid disorder/asthma may also be associated with premature contractions. Sincerely Sukhvinder
