Hi,I am Dr. Amitkumar Sharma (Internal Medicine Specialist). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
My father aged 72 years, suffered from a hemorrhagic stroke six months back (December 2009). He has undergone emergency brain surgery to remove the haematoma. He is now recovering from his surgery. He is still paralytic in both the limbs on the left side and undergoing physiotherapy.
He is taking medicines to control Blood Pressure (Amtas 10 and cardivas 6.25 twice a day). His bp is around 160-90. He is taking eptoin 150 once also.
My question is as to how long should the eptoin continue to be taken ?also about bp medicines.
Hello Your father suffered a stroke in the brain and paralysis occurs and this is most common due to hematoma or known as brain stroke or brain hamorrhage . Eptoin is phenytoin is prescribed in hematoma cases for control of seizures ( may be due to hamorrhage in brain ). Your father is also taking amtas 10 mg and this is a most potent drug for HIGH blood pressure . He is also taking lipid lowering agent ( cardivas). This is important because hypercholestrolaemia and hypertension are the main causes of brain hemorrahe . So take these drugs till your doctor advise these . Usually there are side effects but in your father case age 72 years so don't think about side effects . Regular intake of drugs are important. Good luck.
