Hi,I am Dr. Amitkumar Sharma (Internal Medicine Specialist). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
My son is on keppra and has been for three years. He is now seven and the behavioral and mood changes we were tolerating before but now seem to have really gotten worrisome. I want him off keppra. He has had one seizure ever, when he was 3, and they out him on meds due to an abnormal EEG. His repeat EEG when he was six was also abnormal and now they are requesting a follow up MRI, scheduled for next week. But now that i am almost 100 positive the moods and crying and depressive states we are areing are due to the medication I don t want him on it anymore. What should I do? I will call his doctor in the morning, but I don t know if I want him on meds at all anymore.
Keppra (levetiracetam) can cause symptoms that your child is facing. But if the EEG is not normal, then it's difficult to remove the anti epileptic. One general rule neurologist follow is to reduce the dose over time if the child is symptom free for 3 years on medications. But this is usually done if there are no findings on EEG. The dosage of Keppra is 10mg/kg/day and can be reached upto 30mg/kg in children. As you have not mentioned the type of EEG changes and the type of epilepsy your child is having, it's difficult to suggest any alternative medications. You can consult with your neurologist about the alternatives and try for tapering and switch over to alternatives if there is a recurrence. Hope this helps. Thanks.
