What Is The Duration Of Synthroid Intake Before Conceiving Again?
My TSH was 7.2 a few days ago. I had a miscarriage 1.5 weeks ago and I am 45 years old. I seem very healthy. I have 3 children, my last born when I was 34. How bad is this TSH number? The other two numbers T3 and T4 (?) were within normal range. I was diagnosed with hypothyroid in 2011 but have never taken meds for it. My initial TSH was 9.42 and went down to 2. something after removing gluten from my diet. How long should I be on synthroid before trying to get pregnant again?
Hi, Welcome to HCM. I have gone through your question and understand your concerns.
You are having sub clinical hypothyroidism - a small decrease in thyroid function. Here TSH will be above normal but less than 10 miu/ml and thyroid hormones (T3, T4) are normal.
In pregnancy the subclinical hypothyroidism is associated with an increased chance of miscarriage - by around 2-3 times. So you need to be started on synthyroid. Usually the thyroid function will normalise by 4-6 weeks. Repeat the thyroid function after 6 weeks. If it is below 2.5 miu/ml. You can plan for pregnancy.
Additional tests that are needed are anti thyroid antibodies and ultrasound neck. If any of these tests are abnormal, you have to be continuously on synthyroid.
Hope I have answered your query. If you have any further questions I will be happy to help With warm regards, Dr Ajish TP (MD,DM) Consultant Endocrinologist.
