What Is The Expected Healing Period After Vaginal Hysterectomy?

I just had a vaginal hysterectomy on Friday the 13th; when can I expect to feel better? I am in pain and terrifically weak -- also 71 years old! -- an uncomfortable. Mostly I ant to know that I will be okay, for a woman my age! Thank you, Susan Tixier

Hi Susan and welcome to HCM,

I understand your discomfort. The healing time for vaginal hysterectomy varies from person to person and also from the type of surgery, age and extent of dissection needed. It takes about 3- 4 days for the pain to subside by 80%. The dull ache usually remains in a few women for some days and occasional very mild pain may be there till 2-3 months.
Pain killers may be used for 5-7 days after which they are mostly not needed. The weakness is variable and more after the age of 65. So take rest. Do your routine personal work. Eat a healthy diet of soups, green vegetables, 2 helpings of meat in one day, one egg white, and if your are not diabetic a good supply of carbohydrates [ not sugars] like wheat bread and rice. At least one fruit per day is needed. Eat in small portions frequently and eat as much as you can digest. The food outline that I provided is a guide.

You must have been prescribed drugs to build up your hemoglobin like iron and vitamin tablets. Get hemoglobin test, if it is low, take iron preparation along with B complex vitamins. You may also ask your doctor for iron injections as they are better in older ages when iron tablets may produce gastric irritation.

It will take about a month for regaining back your strength.

You will be fine after that. So do not worry. Hysterectomies are common at your age and patients recover well.

Hope this satisfies your query.
