What Is The Feeling Of A Lump At The Back Of My Throat?

I have, what feels like, a ball in the back of my throat. I ve been trying to get it out for a couple of days now by trying to use the muscles in my throat, but it s not working. I am a smoker.. Could this be cause of it, or could it be something else entirely?

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hi,

Noted your short history about having a feeling of a ball in throat, smoker, unable to remove the ball, muscles strained now.
The commonest causes of such feeling are as follows:
Globus hystericus is a disorder in which there is actually no lump or so but the patient feels that there is a lump.
Enlargement of the lymphoid follicles.
Strained muscles.
Inflammation of cartilages/bones.
This can be diagnosed well by the following ways:
Endoscopy for the pharynx preferably by an ENT Surgeon.
CT scan of neck if required.
Relevant blood tests.
IF there is a cause you will be treated as per the findings.
If there is no physical cause means you need a proper counselling and psychological treatment.
Avoid stress and anxiety.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. T. Chandrakant, ENT and General Surgeon
