What Is The Life Expectancy With Aortic Aneurysm And Vascular Disease?
my 83 year old father has
1.6cm huxta renal abdominal aortic anerrysm
2.probable carcinoma of ampulla/duodenum and not fit enough for whipples surgery
3.pacemaker and periphal vascular disease
he has been advised to go home and make the most of his life, what would you say his life expectancy is?
Hello and thank you for your question. It is very difficult to estimate the life expectancy as all patients are different. Usually when a doctor tells a patient to go home and make the most of his life it means that the doctor feels that the patient may die within the next year. You would need to ask the doctor that told him this if this was his meaning when he said it. Death from an aneurysm is particularly unpredictable as some people can live for a long time with one and other die suddenly with it. People do not usually die of peripheral vascular disease, but it may mean that he also has disease in his coronary arteries which can cause a sudden death. The cancer that is inoperable is also rather unpredictable as some people live a long time with it and in other is progresses rapidly. Please help him enjoy what ever life he as left and help him take the focus off the amount of time it may be. Focusing on the amount of time he has left will cause anxiety. Focusing on a good quality of life and having some pleasure in life with decrease anxiety.
