What Is The Prognosis For Type-II Respiratory Failure?
mys sister is down with arnold chiari malformation type 1 with syringomyelia she has undergone two surgery 2003 and 2005 respectively. recently she was diagonised with respiratory type II failure now she is bedridden is there any scope of improving her health ?
Thanks for your question on Healthcare Magic. I can understand your concern. Type 2 respiratory failure means hypercapnic (high carbon dioxide) respiratory failure. This means she is not exhaling carbon dioxide out of the body effectively. It is commonly seen with brain diseases and neurosurgery patients. Brain controls respiration (inspiration as well as expiration). So when diseases of brain progress, respiration is also affected, specifically expiration. Since her brain condition is irreversible and not improving, her type 2 respiratory failure will also worsen and not improve. So prognosis in her case is very poor. Hope I have solved your query. I will be happy to help you further. Wishing good health to your sister. Thanks.
