What Is The Reason For Severe Headache And Neckpain?

I am having very bad pain in my neck - more on the left side than the right. I am having constant muscle spasms in my upper shoulders and neck and a lot of swelling. This has grown progressively worse over the last 7 months. I have had cortisone shots in my upper left shoulder area and back in November and in my left neck area in December. I have just finished all the therapy that medicare will pay for in whatever their time frame is - I was stopped by my doctor from finishing my last three therapy sessions until we can find the source of the problem. The pain is now going into my head and creating bad headaches at various times. I am basically bed-ridden because I need a support pillow (neck pillow) with the largest roll directly behind my neck. I can press against this pillow and become almost pain free until I must move; if I am up and moving around the pain is so severe that I am can.t think straight. I am a retired educator with a doctorate degree and I love to be up and going strong. I recently opened a small business and now hurt so much that I can t stand to work.

Hello,

As per your history, it may be due to occipital neuralgia.

For further assessment you may require MRI neck and nerve conduction studies after consultation.

Till then for pain you can take tablet acetaminophen. Apply diclofenac gel or ointment locally. Heating pads will also help.

Do regular physical therapy. Avoid strenuous activity. You may require tablet Pregabalin after consultation

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Shyam B. Kale, General & Family Physician
