Hi,I am Dr. Andrew Rynne (Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
What Is The Recovery Time For Flu In An Elderly Patient?
My father has been diagnosed with influenza A. He has pneumonia in both lungs and needed bipap support over night. Today he is very much improved and out of ICU. Heart echo test indicates no problems there and although 96 years of age he is very high functioning mentally and physically. He does not require any regular medications. My question is..what should I expect for recovery time given the severity of the flu and his age. The local hospital has 2 additional admissions for flu in August, which is very very unusual.
Hello, I've carefully read your question and I can tell you that a man of 96 years old like your father could need until 2 weeks for a complete recovery after a flu and pneumonia. Flu and plenumonia are very serius illnes for older people, but since your father has benn discarged without any cronic medication, he will probably recover completely in 2 weeks. Regards
