A very good friend suffered today a "massive stroke on the left side" per the nurse. "He can move his arm & legs, unable to talk and does not recognize anyone". Since I am not part of the family they are sharing very little with me. His sons will be flying in from the west coast and maybe I can find out more. He is 73, smokes and drinks every day. Your thoughts. Thank you
hello thank you for writing to us, stroke on the left means there fault in the right side of the brain. it may be because of lack of blood supply(as in ischemic stroke) or might be due to bleed from a blood vessel (as in hemorrhagic stroke). as you did not mention the past medical history and keeping in view of risk factors like age, smoking and drinking i'am of opinion that it might be a ischemic stroke. the symptoms you mentioned suggests that there is loss of blood supply to the brain's area which controls the speech. MRI with MRA and carotid Doppler will definitely give the diagnosis. A neurologist will a better person for consultation and further management. hope this will clear some of your doubts.
