What Is The Remedy For The Productive Cough With Yellowish Mucus?

More than two months ago I had what was either a cold or a mild case of the flu. I recovered from it within 3-4 days. But one thing that has lingered since then (and which I think started immediately prior to the cold) was an occasional productive cough. Mucus is usually white or yellowish, and cough is infrequent--most often at night, but during an episode I might find myself coughing very hard for a few minutes. I told my primary physican about it earlier this month and she was not concerned--she listened to my lungs and said they sounded fine. But since it's been two months, I wonder if I might be dealing with some kind of persistent infection that may not really be interfering with breathing, but still may be a cause for concern. I do have asthma, but it's been under good control since my cold.

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hi ! Good evening. I am Dr Shareef answering your query.

If I were your doctor, I would advise you for nebulisation with budesonide 1 mg twice a day, send your sputum for culture and sensitivity test, and start an antihistamine, and broad spectrum antibiotic which could be changed as per the sensitivity report. I would also go for some routine blood tests like CBC and ESR, AEC. If needed later, plain X ray of chest might also be advised. Further management would depend on the reports.

I hope this information would help you in discussing with your family physician/treating doctor in further management of your problem. Please do not hesitate to ask in case of any further doubts.
Thanks for choosing health care magic to clear doubts on your health problems. Wishing you an early recovery. Dr Shareef.
