Is there a safe drug for my 15 year old boy that will reduce his excessive sweating? Or, are there any safe drugs whose side effects include decreased sweating? His sweating is causing major anxiety and is preventing him from engaging in social activities.
1. generalised (all over the body ) which usually has an underlying cause like some endocrine or neurological problem. He needs thorough evaluation by physician for ruling it out. In case, no underlying cause is present, then he can be started on atropine like drugs but they do have side effects like dryness, constipation etc. Anxiety itself increases sweating, so he need to be put on anti- anxiety for a short period also.
2. localised ( on one part like palm or soles). It is usually without any cause in palms, soles or axilla but on other areas, there are neurological underlying causes. If without cause, he can started on some solution like aluminium chloride which can be applied twice a day. For a prolonged action (3-6 months), one can use botox (botulinum toxin ) also. recently, new therapies like Sweat X (radiofrequency therapy) have emerged in the market which claim to have effect for 5 years for axillary sweating.
Hope, You will be able to decide further course of action according to kind of hyperhidrosis he has
