Hi dr. my name is David, age 22. i love a girl who has sickle cell anemia . she has much complications, she had regular pain in legs and hands, swellings, pain killer do not relief her? what is the better treatment ? how much is the possibilities that my child will have sickle cell anemia?? i need your help...
Hi welcome to HCM, I am Dr. Das
Sickle cell anemia is an inherited abnormality in production of hemoglobin. In this disease the normal biconcave shape of RBC is changed into Sickle shape due to mutation in the gene responsible for hemoglobin synthesis. it leads to obstruction of microcirculation and hemolytic anemia.
Now, there is 2 conditions related to this disease. One is homozygous state where patient has total inability to form normal hemoglobin and a heterozygous state where patient has mild inability to form normal Hemoglobin.
Transmission of this disease depends on both the parents. If one is homozygous and other is normal then chance of the baby to have the disease is 100%. If one is heterozygous and other is normal then chance of the baby to get the disease is 50%.
so, you have to know the genetic status of you and your girlfriend. Only then the chance of your baby to have this disease can be said.
Regards.
sickle cell anaemia has little specific treatment except regular checkup and medicines for pains
bone marrowstem cell replacement may help cure in some cases
take her to advanced center and get treatment that is best for her as to be decided by doctor
Hi,
Sickle cell anaemia is a serious problem and very difficult to cure (to some extent by bone marrow transplant). It is a genetic disorder so offsprings are also at a risk. Managment of this disease is also expensive. It make life shorten and dificult.
Hi David
sickle cell anaemia is a genetic disorder and calls for expert handling. yes it can be transferred toyour kids also. There are herbs that support this condition and offer good relief but to commit of total cure is premature yet. Most commonly used herbs are Tinosporia cordifolia,Emblica officinalis, Cyperus rotundus, and along with this iron in the form of mandur [ microfined iron ] is used In herbal treatments.
