Hi, my 4 year old has been diagnosed with mild tonsillitis. I didn't want to give him antibiotics so have been treating naturally and the pus that was present has now gone but tonsils still have red veins on them and still swollen. It has been a week. I am now looking at giving him antibiotics but have researched that unless it is Strep/bacterial, the antibiotics won't do anything except kill all his good gut flora if it is viral, is this correct?

Orthopaedic Surgeon, Joint Replacement, Dr. Saurabh Gupta's Response
Hello, Thanks for your query. Enlarged tonsils are due to hypertrophy of tonsils during this age group or due to inflammation because of infection or allergy. As the age grows, there will be shrinking in the size of tonsils so that surgery may not be required. Tonsillitis can be treated with antibiotics. Ibuprofen decreases pain, swelling, and fever. I do hope that you have found something helpful and I will be glad to answer any further query. Take care
