As far as over the counter medicines are concerned it is difficult for us to comment on it so if you feel you can take what ever you like .It is always better to consult a doctor rather than self medication.

I never give you advise to go for any medicine on the chemist counter.You do not know the side effects of the medicine,how much is the dose and how much time it is to be continued.
As per your example you have asked for strong medicine for cold,now many medicines available which contain phenyl propalamine which is now banned, you do not know this and chemist will give medicine which contain phenyl propalamine.
therefore never go to chemist counter for any medicine.Avoid self medication.
