What Is The Treatment For Break In The Foot?

my mom has had a recent break in her foot and has been told to where a foam walkaboot and she failed to wear it today and has a bone pertruding out about half way up her left foot on the inside.she hasnt noticed it before and is in great pain,should she go to hospital or ice it and go tommorow??
