I have had the 24 hour urine test for cortisone, it was okey but I have all the symptoms of Cushing syndrome. The Buffalo hump on my upper back is getting bigger and it is so ugly and is very distressing,I am constantly plucking hair from my chin and have to strip the hair from my upper chin .I am a diabetic and have high blood pressure which is under control. My weight was between 8-9 stone until I was 50 and then went up and down and I am now 87 Kilo. I don t feel very feminine any more although I try to dress as smart as I can.I am 77 and have this problem for a Long time, please can you help me. Judith Piggott
The treatment of Cushings syndrome is based on the cause and location of the mass producing excess cortisol. The first task is to establish the disgnosis of Cushings syndrome. Once confirmed, the next task is to locate it. Once located, the next attempt will be to surgically remove it. If that is not possible, we may give radiotherapy or drugs to control symptoms.
I am sure that you must have gathered information about Cushing Syndrome online. One thing you must understand is that, symptoms like weight gain, buffalo hump, hair growth etc are not very specific for Cushings syndrome and they can occur in a number of other conditions including simple obesity. If you search online, you can also come across a term called "pseudo Cushings syndrome". This refers to conditions which can mimic Cushings syndrome. Uncontrolled diabetes is one of them.
However, we can not ignore your symptoms. The 24 hours Urine cortisol test has > 90-95 % reliability. So there is a 5-10% chance of missing the diagnosis sometimes. You may need to repeat this test after few months . Your endocrinologist will be able to guide you further.
