Hello Dr. Samuel. I am an active 66 year old male who is in good health and never smoked. I have a pain shooting down my right leg called Iliotibial Band. The band only hurts/throbs when I lay down to go to sleep at night. How can I ease this problem?

Orthopaedic Surgeon, Joint Replacement, Dr. Saurabh Gupta's Response
Hi, Thanks for your query.
The iliotibial band is a long piece of fascia that runs down the outside of the leg from the top of the pelvis to the outside of the shin bone. It can pop or clunk back and forth over the greater trochanter of the femur bone on the outside of the hip.
You can ease this problem by physio for stretching of the iliotibial band and strengthening of the hip musculature. Antiinflammatory medication might be of benefit.
I do hope that you have found something helpful and I will be glad to answer any further query. Take care
