What Is The Treatment For Joint Deterioration?

I have just had a bone density test and it shows deterioration in the hip area. The doctor had advised me to take 2000 mg of vitamin d daily along with 1000 mg of caltrate. I stopped taking Boniva and other medication because there was not any significant improvement. Last year I took 100,000 mg of vitamin d once a week and my test was slightly improved. The doctor also advised to walk 1 to 2 miles a day, 5 days a week. Is there anything else you can suggest other than medication?

I am 75 years old, very active, wt 160 lbs and am 5' 2" tall.
