Hi,I am Dr. Andrew Rynne (Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
how long can an 87 year old frail woman 105 lbs w/ CHF survive w/ low hemoglobin level of 5 which continues to drop. She is refusing testing to determine where bleed is and hospital will not offer any additional transfusions because she refuses treatment. She is receiving Hospice care
Hi, A hemoglobin level of 5 is extremely low and will affect her well-being. However, if she is of sound mind then she has the right to refuse investigation and treatment. Ideally she needs extensive investigation and iron supplements and possibly a blood transfusion. I suggest she could be offered iron supplements and some dietary advice. She would benefit from a healthy and balanced diet. This needs to include iron rich foods such as leafy green vegetables, pulses, iron-enriched cereals, pulses, brown rice and eggs would be a good start. I hope this helps. Regards, Dr K A Pottinger
