What Is The Treatment For Low Hemoglobin Level In A Child?

My GP has just advised us that my 13 year old son has a low haemoglobin level following a routine blood test. They say it is 12.2 when normal range is 13 - 16. He has no other symptoms. We have been asked to visit GP. What couldn this mean, we are very worried. Thanks

Hello and welcome to HCM,
Low hemoglobin levels suggest anemia.
Anemia occurs due to many causes like blood loss, decreased blood production and increased destruction of red blood cells.
Thus, further investigations are required to know the cause and type of anemia.
Investigations include- red cell indices and peripheral blood smear examination.
Once the type of anemia is known, further ,management can be planned.
Consult your primary healthcare provider for further work up.

Thanks and take care
