What Is The Treatment For Spitting Of Phlegm In An Alzheimer's Patient?
My mother has alzheimer's. She has been spitting up phlegm for 4-6 months now, but it has take a BIG turn for the worse. He PC doctor says there is no infection. It is wearing her out to spit constantly. What course of action do I take? Should I get a second opinion? Is there something else I can try? She is so tired that it is affecting her will to go on. Please advise me. Thanks.
Thanks for your question on Health Care Magic. I can understand your mother's situation and problem. Aspiration is common in alzheimer 's disease. So in her case we need to rule out aspiration pneumonia. She is coughing since 4-6 months, so possibility of aspiration pneumonia is more. Get done chest x ray to rule out pneumonia. She may need antibiotics and antihistamines drugs. Since all these drugs are prescribed medicines, you need doctor 's prescription for them. So consult pulmonologist and discuss all these. First diagnose herself and then start appropriate treatment. Hope I have solved your query. Wishing good health to your mother. Thanks.
