What Is The Treatment For The Cysts In The Brain Of The 20 Weeks Fetus?
My wife is pregnant and we were informed at 20 weeks that our baby had two cysts on her brain. One is 7mm and the other is 4mm. They want us to pay $900 to have another ultrasound at a hospital far away. I want to know if there is anything they can do for the baby if it is diagnosed with a chromosomal disorder and if it is possible to just wait until the 28 week ultrasound to see if the cysts have disappeared like most of them do, or do we need to get the ultrasound done right away. Keep in mind I am a teacher (in Florida) and I cannot afford $900, especially if I might have a baby with a chromosomal issue.
Cyst in baby brain is mainly due to choroid plexus cyst which can be usually disappear by 32 weeks of pregnancy. Yes! it is true that chromosomal abnormalities are usually associated with cyst.( but not in all cases).
You can go for triple marker test( to see the chances of Down syndrome and trisomy) , see the age( if mother is more then 35yrs.). Please correlate this with cyst. If predisposing factor for chromosomal abnormalities along with cyst present than you should go for ultrasound. It is true that as such there is no treatment for chromosomal disorder.
Hope this is useful to you. Feel free to discuss more. Good luck. Regards Dr. Richa
