What Is The Treatment For Urinary Tract Infection And Constipation?
My 92 yr old dad has an indwelling Foley catheter due to prostatectomy and has had many UTI s over the last 3 years. His catheter is being changed every three weeks by a home health nurse. The nurse suggested trying D-mannose for the infections or trying low dose trimethoprim once a day for an extended time for prophylaxis. She mentioned AZO which might help his possible bladder spasms. They think the leaking around his catheter might be due to bladder spasms. Ditropan resulted in constipation and more mental confusion for my dad. What do you think about these three suggestions?
Hello and welcome to HCM. As an Urologist, i can fully understand your concern. Why is he on a catheter after a prostatectomy.? If he's having incontinence, but able to pass urine freely,he could be put on a condom catheter, or be on intermittent catheterisation. Both help avoid an indwelling catheter and recurrent infections. This decision needs to be taken urgently. Neither AZO, D-mannose,or Trimethoprim once daily, will prevent UTI. UTI should be checked by doing an urine culture. Check his creatinine,PSA and sugar. You may send a direct question to me,for an expert opinion. Dr.Matthew J. Mangat.
