I would like to ask about a patient I have met in the remote area of my country when i was there for my field works, a patient complained that she initiated to have weakness and after 2 or 3 days she could not walk at all even to leave her leg, with this symptom how can we treat and advise her?
Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.
However, the answer is a little difficult because such paralysis may be cause by many different causes, simply knowing there is weakness is by no means enough and tests are needed to identify the cause before we start discussing treatment which varies according to the cause. The most likely possibilities would be peripheral nerve damage like for example in acute polyradiculoneuritis (Guillain-Barre syndrome) or spinal cord damage due to inflammation, stroke, tumors etc. As I said a proper neurological exam as well as probably tests like spinal MRI an EMG are needed.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
