What Is The Use Of Epilim?

I recently changed over from 1600mg priadel (lithium) and 225mg Effexor xl daily due to severe hand and limb shaking and also a prolonged medium depression for so year to 1600mg epilim chrono 500mg and 300 twice daily along with 2mg rispeva daily and also quetiapine 50mg daily, it has taken a few weeks to adapt to this new regieme but am doing reasonably well on it so far except no change in a previous constant problem sleeping ie no regular sleep pattern. my questions are firstly 1. why have I been put on epilim as it is prebominilty a drug for epilisy or as an anti psychotic surely there is a better replacement for lithium. 2. the effects of the quetapine as a sleeper lasted maybe a week or so not working now also an anti phychotic not sleeping tablet. what gives. would appreciate your opinion thank you peter

Dear Peter,

Thanks for your question.

The fact of the matter is that you are suffering from Bipolar Affective Disorder, in the depressive phase. Priadel is a mood stablizer that prevents your mood from swinging into a high (mania or hypomania) or a low (depression). Effexor XR is merely an anti-depressant quite like Prozac. The low doses of Rispeva 2mg and Quetiapine 50mg work as anti-psychotics, and to some extent, sedatives (for sleep). Nevertheless, we need something that will treat your core problem, the instablity of your mood. Epilim (Valproate) is a tried and tested drug for this. If you do not like Epilim, it is probably because of a stomach upset. Please speak to your psychiatrist vocally about this. You can always request another mood stabilizer other than Epilim. There are many other alternatives.

Please feel free to inquire any other health problems.
