What Medical Conditions Would A Doctor Prescribe Propantheline For?
Other than treating ulcers ... what others medical conditions would a doctor prescribe probantheline? I have been taking probantheline for 66 years as an alternative to surgery to treat excessive sweaty palms ... hyperhydrosis ... now my insurance company denies coverage because is not approved as a treatment for hyperhydrosis ... I am angry about this arbitrary decision without consulting me or my doctor.

General & Family Physician, Dr. Priyanka's Response
Hi,
Propantheline is primarily used to treat symptoms of gastrointestinal disorders such as peptic ulcer, acid reflux, and gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD). It works by slowing down the activity of muscles in the stomach and intestines, which reduces the amount of acid produced and improves symptoms of indigestion and heartburn.
Propantheline is sometimes used off-label to treat excessive sweating (hyperhidrosis), but it is not an FDA-approved use for this condition, and insurance coverage may vary. If you are concerned about the insurance decision, consider discussing alternative treatment options with your doctor.
Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards,
Dr. Priyanka, General & Family Physician
