What Medications Apart From Amlodipine Can Be Used To Treat Diabetes?

I need a different blood pressure med--last week, I experienced a severe reaction to 10 mg of amlodipine after 3 weeks of starting. I am 80 years old, newly diagnosed with diabetes, and am very sensitive to medications--have had 3 previous serious reactions.

I totally understand your concerns about your blood pressure and diabetes problem.
The following points should be taken into consideration:
1- In the case of diabetes, the first line treatment for hypertension are either ACE inhibitors (such as lisinopril), or ARBs (such as losartan), because these medications protect your kidneys from the negative effect of diabetes. Add to that they are very good in protecting the heart from the effect of hypertension and they are associated with a better outcome if given to patients with a history of myocardial infarction or heart failure.

2- like any other medication, ACE inhibitors and ARBs have side effects going from rash to edema to cough, Gastrointestinal side effects and musculoskeletal side effects. Every patient responds differently and hence it is better in your case since you already experienced severe adverse reactions to certain medications, it is better to be cautious when taking these medications too.

Best Regards
